Sharing Sunshine with the Children of Louisiana
"I am proud and excited to announce the formation of an initiative to help build our children’s self-esteem," said First Lady Alice Foster. "What started with the simple desire by three women to give something or do something special for children, has blossomed into a beautifully illustrated book which is designed to build every child’s self esteem, to stress the value of every child, to encourage reading to and by young children, and to strengthen the bonds between adults and children in Louisiana." Entitled, "You Are Sunshine," the book was written by Shirley Porter, in consultation with Mrs. Foster. A foreword for the book was written by the First Lady. Large, colorful illustrations by Lisa Homan-Conger promise to capture the hearts of its readers. The book will be distributed free, to four and five year old children throughout the state. "You Are Sunshine," will be the main component of this statewide project. The book addresses some of the issues that affect a child's self-esteem and also suggests ways that parents and caregivers can help children develop a positive self-concept. A companion video stressing the importance of parental involvement and how parents can assist in their child's education and the development of their self-esteem will also be developed.
Parents, teachers, mentors and even older children will be encouraged to read "You Are Sunshine" with children at pre-school and kindergarten grade levels. "I am also proud to announce that this specially authored book will be the first in a series which I personally will promote," said Alice Foster.
